Course Description

The purpose of LifeSTEP is for the University of Arizona department of psychology to act as a Community Service Agency (CSA) in the delivery of life skills training and mentor services through an Undergraduate Internship Study Program available to AHCCCS-enrolled children. These services include teaching independent living, social, and communication skills to the mentees in order to maximize the youth's ability to live and participate in the community and function independently. Examples of areas that may be addressed include self-care, household management, social decorum, same-and opposite sex friendships, avoidance of exploitation, budgeting, recreation, development of social support networks and use of community resources. The CSA accommodates 45-55 AHCCCS-enrolled children each semester. Each student screened and selected to function as a LifeSTEP intern spends 4 hours per week with his/her assigned AHCCCS-enrolled child in addition to one hour per week of group supervision with a graduate student supervisor.
