Course Description

Teaching involves the development of pedagogical knowledge and skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and a repertoire of practice that includes tools for active learning, formative assessment and constructive feedback. It also involves self-awareness of one's philosophy of teaching and development of a professional identity as an educator.

This course will introduce a practical framework for reflective teaching and professional identity formation and principles of and best practices for formative assessment strategies and constructive feedback and teaching in clinical settings as well as evaluation of teaching.

Course content is based upon a review of the literature in these domains and, in part, derived from the Residents As Educators program at the UArizona College of Medicine-Tucson.

This elective involves both independent, asynchronous learning online to learn the fundamental concepts and knowledge of core concepts and engage in reflection on educator development, and active learning via live Zoom sessions.

Live Zoom active learning sessions with peers and the instructor offer opportunities to practice teaching and feedback skills as well as to evaluate examples of teaching and feedback in realistic video scenarios. During live Zoom Journal Club sessions students will lead peer discussions of relevant literature. In the final Colloquy session, students will share their reflections on development of professional identity and their commitment to teaching in their future professional practice.

Students taking this for 2 units of elective credit will also complete a creative project that will serve as an instructional guide for medical students or interns in their future clinical practice and professional development.
