This course is intended to prepare students for the rigors of competing for nationally competitive scholarships, including (but not limited to) the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates Cambridge, Truman, Fulbright, Goldwater, Boren, and Udall. Formerly the domain of students at elite private institutions, nationally competitive scholarships are increasingly accessible to the strongest students at state-supported institutions. Intellectually capable students who write well, speak well, and have an understanding of, and opinions about, national and world issues are competitive for these scholarships. Throughout the semester, students will complete a scholarship portfolio that will provide a foundation for pursuing relevant scholarships. We will address why students might wish to pursue a nationally competitive scholarship, how they can be most competitive in the process, and why pursuing a scholarship, and investigating one's vocation, are valuable endeavors regardless of whether a student receives a scholarship.
