LAW584C - Technology and Aging: Legal and Ethical Developments
Course ID
041822
Course Description
This course provides students with an in-depth look at the ethical, legal and social challenges facing aging adults amidst the rise of novel technologies. New technologies are being touted as a way forward in combating many issues unique to older adults, including frailty and falls, loss of functional independence and social isolation and loneliness. These promises however, are not without their pitfalls. Participants will begin with a broad overview of some of the common features that result in the categorization of older adults as a vulnerable population. Students in this course will explore many of the unique situations many older adults find themselves in and consider these challenges within the context of existing common ethical and legal frameworks. Examples of types of new technologies include monitoring and wearable technologies used in elder care, online tools combatting social isolation, environmental modalities, aggregate data collection, usage and ownership. These will serve as case-studies for the ethical challenge that might arise outside of the healthcare and research realms. Finally, the course will look towards the future, as students will consider the continuous development of these new technologies through the lenses of development and research.
