Course Description

This course examines the impact of trade globalization and capitalism on the non-Western cultures and societies that produce goods. Explore how decisions made in the U.S.by shoppers and multinational corporations alter the cultures, environmental quality, social welfare, and individual rights of people in Asia and the Global South. The course is organized in workshop discussions and active inquiry learning sessions with an emphasis on collaboration, peer learning, and knowledge discovery. Students will engage in personal journaling, semiotic analysis (interpreting the meaning of non-linguistic signs and communication), and cultural ethnography (the study of customs of individual peoples and cultures). Throughout the course, students will build their understanding of how the social, cultural, and physical environments of a non-Western culture are transformed and exploited through our consumer culture.
