Students will explore video and cinematic filmmaking in society from its early chronophotography roots to present day social, promotional, entertainment, informational, political, documentary, transformational, and educational uses. Through project-based activities students will explore the design characteristics of multiple film styles and genres including storytelling, theme, message, target audience, and audio-visual composition. Drawing upon social, visual communication, and multimedia learning theory students will engage in the video production process, including pre-production (e.g., research, scripting, creative design, duration, storyboarding, location, staging), production (e.g., cast and crew, interviews, filming, composition, equipment, lighting, audio), and post-production (e.g., compilation, editing, special effects, captioning, publishing, peer-review). Through this process students will become proficient in purposeful video compilation to document, inform, educate, entertain, and influence social change using mid to professional level video editing software.
