Course Description
Students will be provided with general principles of surgical critical care with a major emphasis on understanding physiology and pathophysiology in order to provide the appropriate care for the critically ill or injured patient. Students will direct care of 1-2 patients under the supervision of the senior surgical resident and surgical critical care faculty, will attend daily rounds in the ICU and formal critical care lectures twice a week.
1. A broad general surgery experience with emphasis on the management of trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care patients.
2. The medical student will be fully integrated into the preoperative, intra-operative and postoperative care of the acute care surgery patient, including management in the ICU.
