Course Description

Nonviolent civil resistance is the application of unarmed civilian power to achieve a political goal, without using or threatening physical harm against the opponent. This course will examine major areas of research on nonviolent civil resistance campaigns as well as political protest and other acts of collective resistance, to understand their causes, dynamics, outcomes, and consequences. The seminar will stress the derivation of theoretically informed hypotheses and the use of empirical data to test them.
