Course Description
This course will use simulated cardiopulmonary bypass to learn the assembly, use, and control of the bypass system. Emphasis will be on catastrophe management. The students will also be introduced in the lab to other equipment used within the scope of practice of perfusion science including intraaortic balloon pumps, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, short term mechanical circulatory assist devices as well as long term ventricular assist devices and artificial hearts. The course will meet weekly for a colloquium where students may be assigned topics for presentation as well as to discuss clinical cases.
