Course Description

EDL 661 is designed to engage doctoral students in a critical exploration of bilingual education issues and trends as located in social, cultural, philosophical, and historical contexts through the lenses of policy and leadership. The course is designed to build and expand critical, technical, and contextual foundations in bilingual education through engagement with topics, theories, empirical works, and learning experiences. Students will explore how both official and unofficial language policies work to normalize some languages and marginalize others. We will analyze the following language policy and leadership issues: Language ideologies and frameworks; family language policies; Restrictive language policies; heritage and indigenous language revitalization and loss; the intersection of language and special education policies and practice; educational leadership.
