Course ID

Course Description

In addition to DNA sequence variability, many physiological and developmental traits are also impacted by lifestyle and environmental factors. This course will examine variation in the human genome, epigenome and gut microbiota and its relationship to nutrition, lifestyle, health sustainability and disease prevention. Students will be introduced to interactions between lifestyle/environmental factors and genes, and how these interactions influence health and disease outcomes. Emphasis will be placed on learning the impact of lifestyle habits and environmental factors on gene expression and gut microbiota, as well as their interactions with genes, food preferences and dietary choices, physiological and disease outcomes. Students will also explore the ethical implications inherent in genomic research, as well as the questions that current advances pose for understanding our past and contemplating the future lifestyle choices based on our genomic information.
