Course Description
Cultural organizations- from art museums to the performing arts- are re-assessing why they exist, who they serve, and how they should be structured and supported to do their best work. This course is designed to introduce principles and best practices for outreach, educational engagement, and audience development in arts organizations of all sizes. Topics highlighted will include diversifying the current audience; growing audience membership; strategic partnerships; providing access to the arts; fundraising; community engagement; and understanding communities.
To develop theoretical and critical understanding of current issues in educational practices and audience development, students will discuss assigned readings and conduct scholarly research, and explore local arts and culture organizations. Students will have opportunities to interact with industry and organization professionals.
