ATMO497 - Severe Convection Fieldwork

Hydrology & Atmospheric SciUndergraduateUA - UA General

Course ID

Course Description

This class is designed as a combination of theory and practical application for the forecasting of severe modes of organized convection such as mesoscale convective complexes and supercell thunderstorms. The in-class portion of the course is designed to inform students of the how and why of forecasting convective initiation, mode, and propagation. In addition, students will learn how to identify and track said convection using a variety of tools, such as weather maps, satellites, and Doppler radar. The field course portion of the class will serve as a practical lab as students will be given the opportunity to forecast and attempt to observe severe convection in person. Visible identification and observation of storm evolution will be emphasized allowing students to reconcile theory to real-life phenomena.
