Course Description

Starting with the premises that we enjoy mental health, this course explores issues that emerge when mental health devolves into mental illness, disease or brain injury. Students will explore the weave of perspectives, perceptions and definitions of cognitive issues, psychological development and the impact of law and society on those with mental disorders. Students will consider how diversity and lack of diversity, equity and inequity, inclusion and exclusion impact mental health, mental illness and our system of justice. Using different perspectives on the functional structures of social justice and how the legal system impacts people with mental disorders, diagnosis and treatments, students will consider reforms needed to improve mental health programs to be more responsive to individual, community and society's concerns.
