Course ID

Course Description
Medicine is a large-scale social endeavor, one of the most sophisticated types of coordination carried out by a society. Today, sociologists interested in medicine have moved far beyond analyzing solely physicians and hospitals, incorporating new stakeholders and venues of interactions into their analyses. In particular, scholars have used the study of medicine and health to make important contributions to a wide range of subfields, including gender, race, inequality, law, social movements, science, urban life, and economic sociology. Sociologists attention to these new stakeholders and spaces, as well as the relationships between them, has expanded our understanding of those subjects of traditional interest in the discipline, such as professional behavior, while opening up exciting terrains for theoretical innovation. Here we investigate the social organization of medicine, its connection with science, and its association with knowledge.
