Course Description

This course examines the school-to-prison pipeline as both a metaphor and social phenomenon as it pertains to the intersection of the institution of education and prison. We explore in detail the education and the juvenile criminal justice system as institutions of inequality and vehicles of crime control. The course draws heavily from educational, sociological and criminological theories to discuss the causes, current trends, and future predictions of youth school discipline and punishment in the United States.
