Course ID

Course Description

The art and cultures of hip hop among Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Asians involve a constant dialogue of self and other--with the goal of crafting a brave, empathetic, spiritual, and beautiful self. This dialogue is a cultural exchange across the Afro-Latino foundational cultures of hip hop, between Asian and Pacific Islander groups, and transnationally across Asia and the United States. This course will explore the ever-evolving perspectives of Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Asian hip hop, especially how hip hop art emerges from the merging of individual, communal, and international perspectives. In the process, the course will examine Asian and Asian Pacific American hip hop history, the translation of cultures, authenticity & appropriation, and contemporary challenges of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students will be challenged to produce a multimedia project based on models of developing knowledge of Self through the Other--practical skills based in Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Asian hip hop cultures.
