Course Description
This course focuses on the forms and functions of Spanish language use in communicating health plans and wellness outcomes. Students will also learn about health disparities affecting the Hispanic/Latino community. Students will learn the theoretical and humanistic foundations of patient-centered communication and how care delivered in a patient-centered manner can improve health and wellness outcomes. Students will improve their Spanish language through peer-to-peer interactions and practice with standardized patients. Students will learn clinical conversation techniques and facets of Latino culture relevant to chronic diseases to facilitate patient-centered dialogues. The chronic illnesses reviewed in this course may include but are not limited to diabetes, heart disease, immunizations, obesity, oncology, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and mental health. Students will be given the skills to develop skills and interventions to help bridge the communication gaps in health care. Other areas related to health disparities that will be discussed may include healthcare systems in other countries, national healthcare initiatives, health literacy, and cultural humility. Multiple teaching methods will be used, including lectures, active learning, reflections, community service, and a semester project.
