Course Description

When, where, and how have human rights been upheld or violated in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) historically and today? What role do human rights issues and claims play in the domestic and international politics of the region? What dilemmas and challenges do human rights advocates in the region face, and what strategies have they adopted in response? This course explores these questions and more by integrating the study of theories and concepts of human rights, political regimes, social movement activism, and international relations with historical and contemporary case studies from a range of countries in the MENA region.
