Course Description

This optional rotation allows medical students to work side-by-side with our Chief Resident of Quality and Patient Safety team on real QI cases to gain hands-on experience in important QI techniques. Students will observe patient safety in action with our team patient safety manager. Students can participate in ongoing QI projects of the team and contribute to the monthly residency QI and Patient Safety education conference. After completion of the rotation, students should be able to propose a viable QI project, describe the role of the patient safety manager in a hospital and the outline the standard process of investigating a reported patient safety event. Students will receive just-in-time training for the QI techniques needed to complete the tasks necessary to create and complete the various aspects of a QI project. Motivated medical students may assist data collection, data analysis and manuscript write-up of ongoing QI projects by the Chief Resident of Quality and Patient Safety (CRQS) team.
