Throughout the history of the United States publicly managed landscapes have represented an evolving relationship between the natural world and American culture and society. American's fascination or disdain for the protection of natural landscapes is steeped in historical, social, cultural, and political factors making the management of these places complex. In order to manage public lands effectively, managers must understand a diverse array of factors that influence the land that is being managed including vegetation, wildlife, recreational users, stakeholder groups, and surrounding communities, to name just a few. In this course we will explore the evolution of American's attitudes towards nature, examine how the evolution in attitudes towards nature have led to many of the management strategies used on public lands, describe the key federal public land management agencies and some of the common methods they use for managing public lands, and identify and discuss contemporary challenges facing public land managers.
