MENA225 - Sports and Society in the Middle East and North Africa

Global Studies, Sch of Undergraduate UA - UA General

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce the social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions of organized sports in the Middle East and North Africa. In the last century, societies in these regions have continued to practice long-standing sports like wrestling and horse racing while becoming fully incorporated into the international sporting system in which football (soccer) is king. Our course materials approach sports in society from two perspectives: the impact on social behavior and institutions like the family and education, and the cultural meanings expressed and created by fans and the media. We also consider the perspectives of different social groups: fans, players, and the business and political class. The course readings and media aim to cover multiple countries and include several popular sports in addition to soccer.
