ATMO180 - Severe Weather & Climate Change Impacts
Course ID
043471
Course Description
An introduction to the concepts of climate and climate change, and how the combination of weather events and extremes shape a climate. A physical basis for understanding the mechanisms of climate change as well as the formation and evolution of severe weather events including but not limited to droughts, heat waves, and hurricanes will be included. Additionally, we will analyze the intersection between social and economic conditions and extreme weather events that make them disasters, particularly to vulnerable populations. We will then evaluate what strategies were put in place to help mitigate the destructive impacts of future events overall and to those populations. Finally, we will discuss the impact climate change has on the global circulation and severe weather events, and we will focus on the effectiveness and ethics of various climate mitigation/adaptation strategies.
