Course Description
This course is for students interested in applying evidence-based research and clinical practice guidelines to develop the skills for delivering a brief health intervention in a community, public health, or healthcare setting. This course introduces and provides an overview of tobacco dependence treatments, as well as related concepts, theories, and models relevant to tobacco dependence, but with broader implications to health behavior change. Specifically, the course involves an application of these models, such as practical motivational interviewing methods and skills to support healthy lifestyles and health & human service systems change so that each individual will experience lifelong optimum health. Additionally, classroom discussions will address clinical practice guideline recommendations, implementation of systems change issues, and materials and examples introduced in the class. The course will be especially useful to students considering careers in health science professions, such as medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health, psychiatry, psychology, behavioral health, social work among others. By the end of the course, students can be certified in Brief Tobacco Dependence Treatment Interventions, a role within the Treatment Specialist for Nicotine Dependence Certification process.
