Course Description
This course provides an exploration of Indigenous politics in the United States, structured around key themes and topics that illuminate the historical, legal, cultural, and contemporary dimensions of Indigenous governance and advocacy. Students will examine foundational concepts, such as Indigenous nationhood, sovereignty, and self-determination, before diving into the governance structures and political institutions that define tribal leadership, including tribal executives, councils, courts, and electoral systems. The course also addresses the historical and legal contexts that have shaped federal Indian policy, including pivotal periods of removal, assimilation, termination, and the self-determination era, while critically evaluating contemporary sovereignty challenges.
