PA381 - Transitional Justice in the United States
Course ID
043612
Course Description
This is an introduction to the study of transitional justice (TJ), or how institutions - local, domestic, and international - address the legacies of human rights abuses. While TJ is traditionally implemented in post-conflict contexts, this course will focus on the possibilities of applying the TJ framework to address historical and contemporary injustices and human rights abuses in the United States. We will begin with an overview of the historical and theoretical foundations of transitional justice. Much of the course will be devoted to studying different transitional justice mechanisms from international tribunals and domestic trials to truth commissions and reparations. While the focus of this course is primarily on the United States context, we will engage with examples of each mechanism from around the world to understand the promises and pitfalls of transitional justice. Finally, we will take a forward-looking approach to evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of transitional justice, and the possibility for TJ in the United States.
