Course Description

This course provides an overview and historical examples of the relationship between buildings, communities, and nature and how these factors led to sustainability practices in the built environment. While learning from cultures around the world, the course will provide context around the sustainability solutions developed with an emphasis on design, technology, and innovation. The course will focus on the following topics; the validity and agency of ancient environmental design, the causes and implications of territorial limitations, expansions, and migrations in the built environment, the period from the Industrial Revolution (1765) to the introduction of the first green building standard in 1990, and the contemporary standards, guidelines, technology, and global movements supporting sustainable cities and buildings in the face of the current climatic crisis.
