This course is an introduction to the primary alternative investment strategies that are available to sophisticated investors including pension plans, insurance companies, foundations, wealth advisors, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals. Major topics include hedge funds, private equity, commodities, real property, private credit, and exotic alternatives. Emphasis is placed on understanding the attributes of each alternative asset class from an investor's perspective, and how they can contribute to improving a portfolio's overall risk and return characteristics. While quantitative topics related to alternative investments will be explored, this survey course focuses primarily on qualitative characteristics.
