Course Description

This course examines absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of various neurochemicals in the central and peripheral nervous systems. It focuses on the effects of CNS depressants (e.g. antiepileptic drugs), CNS stimulants (e.g. nicotine, amphetamines), hallucinogens (e.g. psylocibin), dissociative anesthetics, narcotic analgesics, inhalants, cannabis, nootropics, and neuromodulators, including their actions at the receptors and their influence on synthesis, storage, and release of neurotransmitters. Additionally, the mechanisms of addiction are discussed.
