Course Description

Designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the evolution of the internet as a digital medium, the course will examine the early history of digital media including, ISPs and Portals as information gateway, Search as a unifying experience layer, and then transition into the current influences of social media, streaming, and Generative AIs as well as analyze the ever-changing business of sports media. Throughout, we will discuss the implications of digital media on marketing and advertising practices, both the benefits and the downsides. In addition to course lectures, guest executives will join select classes to help explain the inner workings of some of the most interesting and fastest-growing companies in digital media (e.g. Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Reddit, and TikTok).
