Course Description
This course aims to introduce students to the application of psychological science in correctional settings, focusing on the practice of clinical psychology in such settings. The course will begin by discussing the history of our correctional system and the legal boundaries that have shaped it over time. We will then examine the parallel development of correctional psychology as a specialty, the different roles psychologists can play, and the unique professional and ethical considerations that guide the profession. The focus will then shift to the specific functions of correctional psychologists in clinical practice and provide foundational empirical knowledge regarding the assessment, categorization, and treatment of incarcerated individuals. Due to the wide diversity of incarcerated individuals, the course will also discuss a variety of specialized interventions, populations, and topics.
