Course Description

This course builds on the exploration of synthetic chemistry methods encountered in CHEM 256L, the foundational synthesis lab. This course provides practical training with the laboratory methods used for organic chemistry research, including methods for reaction set-up, isolation, purification, as well as identification and analysis. An appropriate level of theoretical background is provided to build an understanding of the relevant processes. The goals are accomplished through a series of training exercises and project-based activities, and finally through a longer research simulation exercise. The skills gained in this course are broadly applicable to many different areas of science involving the handling of organic compounds.
