Course Description
Crimes against the environment- such as illegal dumping, pollution, and wildlife trafficking- pose serious threats to ecosystems and public health. Green Criminology explores how these harms are defined, addressed, and prevented within various justice systems. This course will focus on three main substantive areas within Green Criminology: environmental justice, ecological justice, and animal rights and concentrate on the relationships between states, corporations, and transnational criminal organizations' roles in perpetuating these harms. Through case studies and current events, students will critically evaluate legal and policy responses to ecological harm and consider pathways towards sustainable justice and development.
