Course Description
This course examines the interdisciplinary role of creative arts in early childhood education, emphasizing integration with STEM, literacy, and socio-emotional learning (SEL). Students will explore visual arts, drama, music, and movement as powerful tools for fostering creativity, critical thinking, and emotional regulation in young learners. This course highlights culturally sustaining pedagogies by incorporating artistic traditions from minoritized and Indigenous communities, promoting equitable and inclusive approaches to arts education. Students will engage in hands-on experiences with studio art materials, digital tools, and eco-friendly art practices to develop sustainable, developmentally appropriate curricula. Through lesson planning, classroom applications, and community-based art initiatives, students will gain practical skills in designing and implementing arts-based learning experiences. Additionally, the course prepares students to advocate for arts integration in early childhood policy and education, equipping them with leadership and professional development strategies to support creative teaching in diverse educational settings.
