Course Description

As the origin of humans and the second largest continent, Africa has natural resource abundance, fast economic growth rates, and a youthful population [an ecotopia outlook]. Paradoxically, Africa's economic growth rates are disproportionately slow compared to its high urbanization and population growth rates [a dystopic outlook]. In this course, students choose an African country, analyze its environmental, economic, and social parameters, conclude on its future, and generate a composite of Africa's 2100 outlook. Students will explore possible solutions to Africa's paradoxical resource-rich curse and demographic time-bomb by building these connections between social, economic, and environmental perspectives.
