Course Description
This rotation provides a comprehensive understanding of necropsy procedures and diagnostic pathology. Students will gain hands-on experience in a variety of diagnostic procedures.
Students will work under the guidance of experienced anatomic and clinical pathologists, microbiologists, and laboratory technicians from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Students will gain practical experience in various aspects of diagnostic pathology, including gross necropsy, cytology, hematology, and microbiology. Students will learn to interpret diagnostic test results, such as those from cytology, hematology, clinical chemistry, histopathology, microbiology, serology, and molecular diagnostics. Students will learn to appreciate the role the clinician plays in providing the optimal amount of information to their diagnostic laboratory to ensure the maximal value of the diagnostic information returned by the laboratory for all submitted cases. Students will actively participate in anatomic pathology instruction, performing gross necropsies on client-owned animals and expanding their knowledge of clinical pathology and other ancillary diagnostics, including regulatory disease testing and the recognition reporting of foreign animal diseases (FAD).
