Course Description

Policies at multiple levels (e.g., federal, state, local) impact the daily functioning and short and long-term wellbeing of children, youth and families. The broad goal of this course will be to use developmental and family science lenses to consider how to inform and evaluate the effectiveness of policies on multiple levels for children, youth and families in the United States. We will also examine the ways in which developmental and family science research can be used to inform the development and implementation of effective and equitable child, youth and family policies. We will consider a wide range of policy areas such as financial security (i.e., poverty alleviation), housing, early care and education, family formation, food and nutrition, child welfare, and sex and gender education. Throughout the course, we will focus on equity and marginalized populations.
