Program Description
Lenses, lasers, telescopes, cameras and communications are all part of optical engineering, which has applications ranging from medical imaging to space exploration. Optical engineers specialize in light manipulating systems. Students seeking the minor in Optical Sciences and Engineering take courses regarding initiatives for improved technology in solar energy, weather forecasting, data transfer and storage, medical diagnostics, electronic devices and space probes. They can do practical design projects and work alongside faculty and professionals on augmented reality displays, smartphone microscopy, and the Giant Magellan Telescope, for example. The Women in Optics club and Student Optics Chapter provide undergraduates with professional development and networking opportunities outside the classroom.
Learning Outcomes
- Have a good understanding of the basic physics and mathematics underlying optical phenomena and optical systems.
- Apply understanding of physics and mathematics to solve technical and engineering problems, especially those related to optics.
- Use optical components, optical and electronic instruments, and computers to perform experiments and do testing in an optics laboratory.
- Work effectively in teams to solve engineering and design problems.
- Effectively communicate with others both orally and in writing.
- Understand professional and ethical responsibilities as engineering or scientific professionals.
