Course Description

Mexico has a unique position in the global stage as a democratizing society, an emerging economy, the world's largest Spanish-speaking nation, and a cultural tradition celebrated across countless borders. This course follows Mexico's modern history and the long-term struggle of creating an inclusive nation among different social groups since the 1810-1821 War of Independence. Key moments in modern Mexico's development such as the Mexican Revolution, the rise of mariachi music, the 1950s golden age of the so-called \"Mexican Miracle,\" drug trafficking conflicts, and social organizing for greater democracy will be examined. Mexico's relationship with the United States, including the formation of the U.S.-Mexican border, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and migration patterns will also be studied to better understand Mexican history.
