MUS160D1 - Human Achievement and Innovation in the Arts
Course Description
The arts are a defining aspect of what it means to be human. Experiencing important works of visual art, classical music, and dance from around the world allows us to get in touch with ourselves both personally and collectively. By enrolling in this course, students become familiar with the formal elements of the arts and how they relate to the viewer/listener's subjective experience as envisioned by the artist, composer, or choreographer. These aesthetic artifacts are explored from the point of view of the humanistic innovations they signify historically, their enduring legacy in the present day, and their role in humanity's construction of civilization. Philosophical notions of beauty and knowledge help contextualize the facts and ideas from a humanistic perspective. The concepts of innovation and achievement in other disciplines are reinforced as crucial lessons that can be learned from engaging with this cultural material.
