The objective is to become familiar with visual art of the last two New World imperial cultures before the Spanish Invasion beginning in 1492: the Aztecs of Mexico and the Incas of the Andes of South America. In addition to learning to identify art works by culture, geographic region, date, subject, form, and materials, the student will learn to describe and analyze their forms verbally. He/she will also learn to compare images to reveal similarities and differences among human cultures, and finally, the student will become familiar with the materials and technology of art. Graduate-level requirements include a 15-18 page research paper chosen in consultation with the professor. They will include references with exact citations (including page numbers)--using any style of referencing, footnotes, endnotes, or in-text--illustrations numbered and put after the text, and bibliography.
