Course Description
This course surveys major figures and traditions, as well as persistent issues in social, cultural and critical theory. The aim of the course is to establish a working knowledge of several foundational approaches to the critical theorization of society and culture, with attention as well to the status of art, politics, law, economics, and psychic life. This course provides a background for graduate students interested in exploring contemporary trends and emergent issues in social, cultural and critical theory. Traditions of thought engaged by this course will include dialectical philosophy, Marxism, psychoanalysis, postcolonial theory, structuralism and post-structuralism, feminism, and queer theory.
