Course Description
Underground: Street Art and Culture is an introduction to contemporary artists and works produced outside of conventional museum and gallery contexts. Through a series of lectures and labs, we explore art practices including graffiti art, tattoos, and outsider art through documentary videos, directed readings, and studio projects. Students are required to explore on and off campus venues to complete writing assignments, participate in discussions, and realize project goals.
In each genre we will examine principle artists, vocabulary, and the cultural significance of the work produced. As a lecture/lab course, projects develop out of lecture materials and discussions, and are broadened through research-based experiences. This course will highlight the conceptual, technical, and visual foundations of underground art works.
