SURG850F - Multidisciplinary Breast Oncology
Course Description
The Multidisciplinary Breast Oncology rotation is a 4-week medical student elective which will give the 4th year student a dedicated introduction to the multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to the management of breast cancer.
The student will have the opportunity to rotate one-on-one with each of the specialty physicians/providers involved in breast oncology care in order to learn the basics of the aspects of care that each speciality contributes. The elective will include dedicated time with breast imaging, pathology, genetics, surgery, reconstructive surgery, medical oncology, and radiation oncology.
The rotation will be primarily an outpatient/clinic based rotation with some time in the operating room. The student will also attend weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor boards and gain experience presenting patient cases at tumor board.
It is anticipated that this will be a valuable learning experience for students interested in primary care, general surgery, surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, radiology and pathology.
This rotation and the involved faculty will provide a supportive, nurturing, and non-biased environment for medical students to be exposed to the importance and benefits of multidisciplinary cancer care.
