Course Description

Pain exists at the intersection of physical health, mental health, and public health. Using an integrated, experiential approach, this course will equip students--future health care professionals, family caregivers, and patients--to conceptualize pain and pain management through a collaborative and interdisciplinary lens. Effects of health disparities in the prevalence, subjective experience, impacts, and outcomes of pain will be explored. The course will provide a broad overview of pain and outcomes in various groups. The impact of the opioid epidemic on healthcare policies in the United States will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on the unique strengths and opportunities facing health professionals committed to improving outcomes among underserved patient populations in Arizona.
