FTV306 - Digital Filmmaking: From YouTube to Netflix
Course ID
043014
Course Description
Digital media influences how we perceive the world. Media, including television shows, YouTube, videos, advertisements, and social media, are crafted into highly constructed tales that are easily consumed and understood. While digital media allows us to stay knowledgeable and connected within our cultures and societies, questions arise as to whose stories, opinions, and information are being told. Who has the technical skill needed to create digital media? Who has the access and means to watch these stories? And most importantly, whose stories are NOT being told?
This fully online course will explore the cultural significance and systemic power dynamics within the media industries. Students will experience what it means to be a creator of stories, i.e. a media artist, through learning the fundamental technical aspects of digital media production, and strategies for story development while also examining alternative stories and voices that provide contrast to those heard most often in mainstream media.
