MUS126 - Music and Screen Media
Course Description
This course explores the relationships between music and visual media, including music videos, documentaries, film, television, animation, video games, and social media. Students will analyze the production, circulation and social meaning of these texts which are embedded in debates about culture and power relations, particularly those marked by class, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. Students will consider the sounds, looks and feelings associated with musical styles and cultures in order to understand the musical conventions that work in conjunction with images to shape and cue audience responses. Students will learn to apply the perspective of an artist to address questions about the narrative possibilities of both original and pre-existent music and the ways in which sound matters on screen.
