Course Description

This course is uniquely formatted as a series of field trips, which builds a layered definition of resilience through examples from the Sonoran Desert. Through place-based activities and discussions, students will gain understanding and experience of the unique environmental, political, and cultural Sonoran Desert context, and the adaptive resilience strategies practiced by resident plant, animal, and human communities. Course materials, activities, and discussions will additionally connect examples of resilience in the Sonoran Desert to parallel examples in other regions of the world that experience similar stressors. Ultimately, this course promotes a nuanced understanding of the concepts of resilience and adaptation, which can be applied to better understand adaptation and resilience solutions broadly in other communities and contexts.
