Course Description

This course examines trauma, addictions, compulsive behaviors, and family violence through a family systems and trauma-informed lens, exploring how traumatic experiences develop and persist within family relationships. Students will learn to assess how trauma impacts different family subsystems, including marital/couple dynamics, sibling relationships, parent-child interactions, and individual functioning within the family context. Gender and cultural issues are central to understanding trauma's impact, and this course will explore how cultural norms, historical trauma, and sociocultural factors intersect with family traumatic experiences. Students will learn trauma-informed, culturally responsive interventions for working with individuals, couples, and families who have experienced trauma in its various forms.
