Program Description

Applied linguistics is a field of study that applies theories of language, learning, and linguistics to solve real-world problems related to language use in various contexts. The Minor in English Applied Linguistics (EAL) develops skills applicable to any career that requires the critical and analytical use of English.

Complementing training in teaching English Language Learners, the Minor includes the study of second language acquisition and English language teaching methodologies.

Studying EAL encourages critical thinking about how English works and can enhance the ability to solve complex problems and written and spoken communication skills, both personal and professional. The Minor complements degrees in English and Creative Writing as well as in Education, Advertising, Communications, Information Science, Journalism, Linguistics, Marketing, Policy Development, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Science.

Studying EAL can also help deepen intercultural communication skills and understanding of the impact of language on global interactions, fostering a greater appreciation for the diversity of human languages and cultures. In this way, the Minor complements degrees in Global Studies, Foreign Languages, and other fields with a global emphasis.
